ARE WE BEING DUPED?
Mr. Ryan has asked a
question and then cites research that has apparently settled the matter.
A
recent literacy survey in Canada (commissioned by the Southam newspaper group)
identified 19% of high school graduates and 8% of university graduates as
functionally illiterate.
Therefore illiterates are 9 times as likely to
graduate from high school as members of Mensa.
In the Business world, both
among the newly hired and the established work force, one finds that success
specifically selects the language proficiency of a child. Perhaps the questions
that should be asked are: Why are those who learn to read well considered
"gifted"? Why does majority opinion consider an IQ of 100 to be superior to any
other possibility? Does it make sense to listen for an hour about something we
can read about in ten minutes?
