THE POLITICIAN: HALF-WIT BY DEFINITION?

At least one study has surfaced this year claiming that residents of the USA who were born elsewhere have a life expectancy some 2-3 years beyond those who were born in the United States.
The Sept. 20, 2004 issue of TIME claims that while most travelers to the USA can expect metal detectors, secure passenger arrival areas, purse, pocket and luggage searches, etc., some 3,000,000 illegal immigrants are arriving every year (about 8,200 every day). Most of them cross the Mexico/Arizona border. Some ranchers believe as many as 300 of them pass across their land each and every night, leaving mounds of garbage and discarded clothing, tearing down fences. Nearby towns are reporting hordes of people virtually tripping over each other in the march to the north. Money sent home from relatives in the USA is acknowledged as Mexico's third most important source of income. The US border patrols are hopelessly undermanned and those arrested or charged get to try again and again until they are successful. Interestingly, any attempt to crack down and enforce the existing laws is vigorously opposed by lobbyists for corporations that have grown accustomed to the lower wages of an illegal labor supply.
According to the Toronto Star, April 18, 2004 the federal government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890 and each can get an additional $580 in social assistance for a total of $2,470. This compares to a single pensioner who after contributing to the growth and development of Canada for 40 to 50 years can only receive a monthly maximum of $1012 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement.
