DEFINITIVE INTELLIGENCE DEFINITELY HIRE: This person is highly
outgoing. She enjoys loud parties, finds it facile to meet new people, and is
energized by the presence of others. Her emotional expressions can be easily
"read," and she is adept at keeping a conversation flowing. In both work and
leisure, she strongly prefers to interact with many kinds of people rather than
to engage in solitary activities.
DEFINITELY DO NOT HIRE: This person is not
outgoing. She does not enjoy loud parties, finds it difficult to meet new
people, and is usually drained by the presence of others. Her emotional
expressions are hard to "read," and she is not skillful in keeping a
conversation flowing. At both work and leisure, she prefers to engage in
solitary activities rather than to interact with many different kinds of
people.
Unwittingly perhaps "ACE THE CORPORATE PERSONALITY TEST" by Edward
Hoffman, PhD. provides a few interesting clues as to why, out of a dues paying
membership for Toronto Mensa of 500 or so, perhaps 15 will show up at a Mensan
social. In November, 1987 my review of "HOW TO BEAT PERSONALITY TESTS" by
Charles Alex appeared on the front page of MC2 and some of its highlights
follow.
"In general, the business world does not look for applicants with
high intelligence scores; it prefers those who score slightly above the average.
As a matter of fact, a TOO BRAINY applicant may be disqualified as not fitting
in with the happy mediocrity of the team. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE TOO
BRIGHT."
"The stereotype of the truly masculine man is one with a strong
stomach who is insensitive to blood, odors, rough language, disgusting remarks
while eating, and so on. Just keep in mind that the rugged he-man is a strong,
boorish, hairy, hard-boiled character who has no cultural inclinations of any
kind and never cracks a BOOK except for those on economics or
salesmanship."
"The exceptions are those who are hired for creative or
artistic positions. These men are supposed to be weak in heterosexuality, but
everyone else must score high in that trait."
"Test compilers don't know much
about women. They always smell clean and sweet and love candy and
super-masculine men."
In general and on the average, any Mensan who has read
this far and fully understood the implications of the foregoing, will no doubt
feel as strongly as I do that education as it is practised at the present time
should be a criminal offence.
Ecclesiastes saw that THE RACE IS NOT TO THE
SWIFT.
McLuhan uncovered the fact that THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE.
Mark
Twain said that God first made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made
school boards.
Now I am here to point out that THE SUCCESSFULARE NOT VERY
LITERATE. And THE LITERATE ARE NOT VERY SUCCESSFUL.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!
